Laser Assisted Liposuction: Is it Safe and is there an Advantage?
The December 2009 issue of Seminars in Cutanoeus Medicine and Surgery is entitled "Advances in Body Shaping". Three of the articles are about laser assisted liposuction. The original machines used for this purpose used a single wavelength of laser light. The newer machines have two laser wavelengths that can be combined. Most of the articles focused on safeness, since the addition of laser energy can produce skin burns.
Dr. Marc Salzman, of the University of Louisville, reported on 36 patients using combined 1064/1319 wavelengths and an internal temperature monitor. Previous studies have monitored external skin temperature, and this study showed that measuring internal skin temperature at the tip of the probe, provided a more accurate indication of the energy being delovered. this should be a safer procedure and Dr. Salzman reported no complications. This is of particular interest to us, since this is the machine, (ProLipo Plus) that we have purhased, primarily because of its enhanced safety design.
Reports on the use of laser assisted liposuction indicate a low incidence of side effects and a high degree of patient satisfaction. Reported benefits of laser assisted liposuction include tissue tightening, decreased recovery time and decreased bruising.
While the final results are not in, it appears that laser assisted liposuction may offer significant benefits over standard tumescent liposuction.
