Liposuction for Biodiesel ? Fat powers SUV in LA
The Beverly Hills Courier reported that a radiologist, Dr Alan Bittner, who was medical director of Beverly Hills Liposculpture, apparently fled the country after the Medical Board of California raided his office and home, in response to complaints that some of the liposuction procedures had been performed by his office manager and girlfriend, Stephanie Darcy. Bittner had posted in his blog, lipodiesel.com, that he had converted the suctioned fat into deisel to power his SUV. This is technically feasible, but is illegal in this country.
He said on his blog "My patients universally love the idea of converting their unwanted fat into fuel. Not only do they get to lose their love handles or chubby belly, but the get to take part in saving the Earth."
The newspaper quoted a "well-known Beverly Hills lipo surgeon, Dr. David Amron", who said "it was unusual that Bittner was a board-certified radiologist who practiced liposculpture."
“There is no specific policy,” Amron said. “As a licensed medical
professional, you are licensed to (practice) what you want. But
generally, with each procedure you are specialized in that
concentration. There are usually two groups of doctors who do
liposuction, board certified plastic surgeons or dermatological
surgeons.” Amron said that since Bittner had opened his Rodeo office in 2007 he had seen "12-15" of Bittner's patients requiring reconstructive surgery.
Needless to say, as a patient you would not want to get involved with this type of practice. As I've indicated previously, you need to do some homework. In general you will be safer choosing a physician that has training in an area relevant to any procedure you are considering, and you must do your best to learn the physician's standing and reputation in the community.
