Can Topical Creams Help Fat Reduction?

Obesity is a significant health problem and a significant social problem as well. Overweight and obese people are significantly more likely to have experienced depression than people of normal weight. Weight loss can reduce the amount of depression among those formerly overweight.

Liposuction is well established as a spot reduction technique, although the weight reduction is minimal at best. A recent study combining diet and exercise with aminophylline cream claimed improved reduction in abdominal circumference in people using the cream Aminophylline cream study . Unfortunately the study methods left a lot to be desired. The ideal study would be "double blinded" where neither the participants nor the evaluators knew who was getting the active agent. In this study there was no placebo cream used and the evaluators were not blinded. Although abdominal fat was reported to have decreased, there was no difference in weight loss between the two groups.
Aminophylline is most commonly used internally and is a bronchodilator commonly used to treat asthma. While aminophylline did appear to have some effect on abdominal fat, other studies of aminophylline application on other areas, such as the buttock, showed no effect. Furthermore there are still some safety concerns related to the topical use of aminophylline.
The question of the efficacy of topical treatments in helping fat reduction or redistribution still remains unanswered. Certainly if they could make people look better, even without providing further weight loss, that would be a significant psychological boost for people who are overweight.
